I recently accepted a teaching position at an international school in Saudi Arabia. Why, you may ask, would a single-white-American-girl do such a thing? Don't I know that they don't like Americans in that part of the world? That women are treated badly there? That I can't drive there? That I have to wear an abaya just to go grocery shopping? That I probably can't own a camel because I'm a woman??!! Well... yes (the camel part is disappointing). But it was an opportunity I couldn't refuse.

I grew up in the Philippines, starting at the age of four, and the world has been in my blood ever since. There's no getting away from it. It haunts me. When I'm living a normal, secure life, I feel restless. I've traveled to over 50 countries, worked in South Africa and Bosnia, and still keep looking for the next adventure. So this seems natural for me. I'm more afraid of the teaching than moving to Saudi Arabia ("the Kingdom"). I have committed to two years and begin this new journey in August, 2005. I can't wait.

I will be posting first impressions & journal entries here as I find the time, as well as photos, so check back in August.

Until then... As-Salaam-Alaikum.... "Peace be with you".

Lu,

I'm so glad you thought of a blog! I love it and will check it regularly. I can't wait to see photos and here about your adventurous year as a first-year teacher. I agree--teaching for the first time is much more daunting than moving to Saudi! Good luck!
